Keep Your Work Safe

Autosave, two copies instead of overwrites, recovery, Recently Deleted, Version History and backups.

3 min read

Graphite is built so that you don’t lose words. Every protection on this page is part of the free version.

Autosave

Graphite saves a moment after you stop typing, and again when you switch tabs or close the window. If a save failed, your browser asks before letting you close the tab.

Two copies, never an overwrite

If the same document was saved in another tab or app while you were editing, Graphite doesn’t choose a winner. The other version is kept, yours is saved beside it as “Name (my changes)”, and a message lets you open the other one. With Google Drive, a version edited in both places is saved as “Name (from Drive)”.

Recovery

If a save fails, a Not Saved badge appears next to the title and your text stays open. A recovery copy is kept on the device the moment you type, and is offered back if the browser crashes. Click Try Again to save.

Recently Deleted

Deleted documents move to Recently Deleted at the bottom of the sidebar for 30 days, where you can put them back. With Google Drive, they go to Drive’s own trash instead.

Version History

While you write, Graphite keeps a snapshot every ten minutes, up to 40 per document. Click the document title and choose Version History… to preview and restore one. Restoring saves your current text as a version first, so nothing is lost. Versions are kept in this browser.

The free version shows the latest 5. All the older ones are still kept, and Graphite Pro Pro shows the full history.

Choose Compare to see what changed between two versions, or between a version and the current text, word by word, side by side or inline. How Compare works.

Backups

  • Choose Back Up Library… from the library menu to save every document as a single .zip of Markdown files.
  • To restore, drag the .zip onto the window, or choose Import Files or Backup…. Markdown and text files can be imported the same way.

Keep it permanent: browsers can clear website storage when space runs low, and Safari may clear it after a week without a visit unless Graphite is installed. In Settings › General, click Keep Permanently, install Graphite, and make a backup now and then. A folder or Google Drive library avoids the issue entirely.
