Link Your Documents

Connect ideas with [[links]], see what links back, and rename without breaking anything.

2 min read

Ideas rarely live alone. Link one document to another and Graphite keeps track of the connections in both directions. Links are free for everyone.

Side by Side: a document with a [[link]] in the editor, and Linked From listing the documents that link to it in the preview

Make a link

Type [[ and Graphite suggests the titles of your documents. Press Enter or click one to finish the link.

[[Essays/Ideas]]
  • [[Title]] links to a document by its name. Capitals don’t matter.
  • [[Title|shown text]] shows different words for the same link.
  • [[Folder/Title]] picks a document in a particular folder. A bare title looks in the linking document’s folder first, then at the top level.

Follow a link

⌘-click a link, or put the cursor in it and press ⌘↩. Hover a link to see where it goes. In Preview, links are ordinary clickable links.

A link to a document that doesn’t exist yet has a dashed underline. Follow it and Graphite creates that document in the same folder, ready to write in.

See what links here

At the end of Preview, Linked From lists every document that links to the one you’re reading. You can also run Links to This Document… from the Command Palette.

Rename safely

Rename a document that others link to and Graphite offers to Update Links. It rewrites the links in those documents for you. A document that was changed in another tab or app in the meantime keeps its old links, so nothing is overwritten.

Outside Graphite

In web page, PDF and Word exports, share links and print, a link becomes plain text. Markdown and blog post exports keep the [[ ]] text as you wrote it.

Private, as always: links are read from your text on your device. Nothing new is stored or sent anywhere.
