Release notes

What’s new

Graphite updates itself. When a new version is ready, the app shows an Update button.

1.4.0 · “4B”, tools for long pieces

Latest

The fifth pencil grade. 4B is soft and dark, made for long strokes. Read the guide.

  • Word targets and deadlines: choose Set Word Target… from the document’s title or the Command Palette. The status bar shows your progress, such as “1,240 of 2,000”, and the words a day you need to make the deadline. The Writing Habit sheet shows it too. The target is kept in the document’s front matter (target: and due:), so it travels with the file.
  • Compare versions: in Version History, choose Compare to see two versions, or a version and the current text, word by word, side by side or inline. Restore This Version works on either side.
  • Paste a web page as Markdown: copying from a browser, Google Docs or Word keeps headings, links, lists, emphasis, quotes, code and simple tables. Scripts, styles and tracking pixels are dropped. Dropping text from a browser works the same way, and pasted text is still credited in Authorship. Paste as Plain Text (⌥⇧⌘V) keeps the words only.
  • Quick capture: share text or a link into the installed app, and Graphite asks Save Shared Text? before it saves anything. New Draft, in the Command Palette and the app icon’s menu, opens a blank page ready to type.
  • Manuscript: choose Make Manuscript… on a folder and its documents become chapters. Drag them into order (the order is a list of links in _manuscript.md), then preview them as one, or export them as a web page or Markdown. Print, PDF and Word Document are Pro, as for a single document.
  • Front matter is no longer counted as words, and it’s left out of Preview, printing and every export except Markdown.
  • Nothing new is stored on our servers.

1.3.0 · “3B”, one account and Pro on sale

The fourth pencil grade. 3B is soft and dark, made for drawing.

  • One way in: choose Sign In, then Continue with Google or Continue with Email. The first sign-in creates your free account. With Google, one step signs you in and syncs your documents with Google Drive.
  • Graphite Pro is on sale, and it belongs to your account: no license keys. Pro Lifetime is $29 once at the founding price, until 13 November. Pro Membership is $3.99 a month or $29 a year. See pricing.
  • How to pay: by card or PayPal through Lemon Squeezy, which shows your local currency and handles tax and receipts.
  • Passkeys: sign in with your fingerprint, face or device PIN, and use a passkey as your second step.
  • Sign Out Everywhere now lists your passkeys and emails you, so you can spot anything you don’t recognise.

1.2.0 · “2B”, a complete Graphite account

The third pencil grade. 2B is soft enough to sketch with.

  • Sign In and Sign Out at the bottom of the sidebar. Once you’re signed in, your photo or initials open a menu with your account and Sign Out, which saves anything unsaved first.
  • Your profile: add a name and a photo in Settings › Account, or copy your Google photo. The photo is resized in your browser, which removes hidden details like location.
  • Two-step sign-in with an authenticator app, plus ten single-use backup codes. If you lose both, recovery turns two-step off after a 7-day wait that you can cancel.
  • Signed-in devices: see every browser signed in to your account and sign out any of them, or all the others at once.
  • Recent activity shows the last 90 days of sign-ins and account changes, and security emails tell you about important ones.
  • Change your sign-in email, link or unlink Google, and add a contact email. News email is off unless you turn it on.
  • Sensitive changes now need a recent sign-in or a two-step code. Read the account guide.

1.1.0 · “B”, accounts and a free month of Pro

The second pencil grade. B is a little softer than HB.

  • Graphite accounts, optional: sign up with Google or with a 6-digit code sent to your email. Writing never needs an account.
  • Launch offer: new accounts created by 13 November 2026 get every Pro feature free for 30 days. Graphite reminds you before the trial ends, and nothing is charged.
  • Settings › Account shows what Graphite keeps. Sign-up asks whether to share usage data (off until you tick it in the EU, EEA, UK and Switzerland); change it any time, download your data, sign out everywhere or delete your account.
  • Pro Lifetime and Pro Membership show Coming Soon until our store opens.
  • The app counts page views with Cloudflare’s cookieless Web Analytics. It never sees a share link’s text. See the privacy policy.

1.0.0 · “HB”, the first stable release

Graphite releases are named after pencil grades, and HB is the standard pencil. Settings › About shows the version you’re using, such as 1.0.0 “HB”.

  • Plans: Graphite, Pro Membership and Pro Lifetime, side by side in the app. Pro Membership is coming soon. Settings › Graphite Pro shows your plan.
  • Favourites no longer disappear when you reload.
  • Authorship: an example of the annotation format at the end of a document is never removed. Author marks that no longer match the text are kept as text, and Graphite tells you so you can delete them.
  • Google Drive: a folder deleted on a device that was behind no longer takes another device’s new documents with it.
  • Graphite Pro: a temporary error from the license server no longer removes your Pro key.
  • Links to names with characters files can’t use, such as [[What? Why]], find their document instead of creating a new one.
  • A rename that arrives from Google Drive keeps the open document’s versions. A failed delete keeps unsaved changes. Signing out of Google waits for the last save.

0.1.0 · First release, with Graphite Pro

Graphite is live at write.aroice.in. Everything below is in the first version. Features marked Pro are part of Graphite Pro, a one-time purchase.

  • Focus Mode, Typewriter scrolling and Zen full screen.

  • Better PDFs and printing: page numbers from page two, headings kept with their text, and code, quotes, tables and images never split across pages. Pro
  • Export to Markdown and Web Page, copy formatted text, and share links that carry the text inside the link. PDF, Word and Blog Post export. Pro
  • Daily goal, streaks, a year-long heatmap and 10, 25 and 45-minute sprints.

  • Paper, Graphite and Auto appearance, three typefaces, offline support and installation as an app.
  • Seven colour themes or your own, four more typefaces, and custom keyboard shortcuts. Pro
  • WCAG AA contrast in every theme, full keyboard control and reduced-motion support.
