Questions

Is Graphite free?

Yes. Writing, saving, backups, recovery and all three libraries are free for good, with no ads and no account needed. Graphite Pro adds colour themes, more typefaces and styles, the editing tools and more, for a one-time $29.

How do I get Graphite Pro?

Buy it on the pricing page or in Settings › Graphite Pro, paying through Lemon Squeezy with the email you’ll sign in with. Then sign in to Graphite with that email and Pro is there, on up to 5 devices. There’s no key.

Do I need an account?

No. Open write.aroice.in and choose Use on This Device: writing on your device needs nothing at all. Google sign-in is optional, for syncing between devices.

Does my writing streak sync?

Yes, with the Google Drive option. Each device adds its own words, so writing on your laptop and your phone adds up and is never counted twice. Your settings and favourites sync too.

What does Graphite see in my Google Drive?

Only the files it creates, in the “Graphite” folder: your documents, plus two small sync files for your writing history and settings. It can’t see anything else in your Drive. The privacy policy has the details.

Can I use Pro on more than one device?

Yes, on up to 5 at a time. Sign in with the same account on each one.

Is there an app for Mac, Windows, iPhone or Android?

Native apps for Mac, Windows, iPhone, iPad and Android are on the way. Graphite started on the web: today it runs in Chrome, Edge, Arc, Safari and Firefox, and installs as an app where your browser supports it.

Where are my documents stored?

Where you choose: in your browser’s storage, in a folder on your computer, or in a “Graphite” folder in your own Google Drive. AROICE never receives them. See Folders, Tags and Search.

Does it work offline?

Yes. Once Graphite has loaded, it works without a connection, and installing it makes that permanent. If you use Google Drive, changes made offline sync when you’re back online.

Which browsers does it support?

Graphite runs in current versions of Chrome, Edge, Safari, Firefox and Arc, on desktop and mobile. A few features depend on the browser:

Writing into a folder on your disk needs Chrome, Edge or Arc. Opening .md files from your desktop needs the installed app in Chrome or Edge. Installing as an app works in Chrome, Edge and Arc, Safari on Mac (Add to Dock), and on iPhone, iPad and Android from the browser’s share or menu button.

Can I use it on my phone or tablet?

Yes. Add it to your home screen for a full-screen app. On narrow screens, Side by Side is replaced by switching between Editor and Preview.

Can I open my existing Markdown files?

Yes. In Chrome, Edge or Arc, choose Open Folder… from the library menu to work directly with a folder of Markdown files. Anywhere else, drag the files onto the window or use Import Files or Backup…. Google Drive can only show files Graphite created, so import existing files rather than expecting to see them there.

Could my browser delete my documents?

Browsers may clear website storage when the disk is nearly full, and Safari can clear it after a week without a visit unless Graphite is installed. In Settings › General, click Keep Permanently, install Graphite, and use Back Up Library… now and then. A folder or Google Drive library avoids the issue entirely.

How do I get back something I deleted or overwrote?

Deleted documents stay in Recently Deleted for 30 days (or in Google Drive’s trash). For earlier versions of a document, click its title and choose Version History…. See Keep Your Work Safe.

Does Graphite use AI or read my writing?

No. There’s no AI in Graphite, and Syntax Highlight and Style Check (both Pro) run on your device. Your text is never sent to us. Authorship lets you keep track of text that came from an AI tool you used elsewhere.

Does it work with other Markdown apps?

Yes. Your documents are ordinary Markdown files. Authorship is stored in the open Markdown Annotations format, which other apps, including iA Writer, can also read. Every export removes it.

Is Graphite accessible?

Every theme, including one you make yourself, keeps text at WCAG AA contrast or better. Everything can be done from the keyboard, and Graphite turns off its animations when your system asks for reduced motion. If something gets in your way, please tell us.

Do links between documents work in exports?

Inside Graphite, yes. In web page, PDF and Word exports, share links and print, a [[link]] becomes plain text, because the other document isn’t there to open. Markdown and blog post exports keep the [[ ]] text as you wrote it.

Which languages are supported?

You can write in any language. Syntax Highlight and Style Check currently understand English. Word counts treat Chinese, Japanese and Korean characters as one word each.

Troubleshooting

“Not Saved” appears next to the title

Graphite couldn’t write the file. Your text stays open and a recovery copy is kept on this device. Click Try Again. With a folder library, check that the folder still exists and that the browser still has permission.

“Reconnect to … to keep writing in your folder”

Browsers ask for folder permission again after a restart. Click Reconnect and allow access.

“Sign in to Google to sync”

Your Google session expired. Keep writing; changes are saved on this device. Sign in again from the banner or the library menu to sync.

“Graphite was updated in another tab”

Reload this tab so it uses the new version and keeps saving.

The app doesn’t show the latest version

When an update is ready, Graphite shows a message with an Update button. If you missed it, close every Graphite tab and open it again.

A document appeared with “(my changes)” in its name

The same document was saved in another tab or app while you were editing. Graphite kept both instead of overwriting either. Compare them and delete the one you don’t need.

Images don’t show in Preview

Images hosted on other websites aren’t loaded until you ask, because loading them tells those sites you’re reading. Click Load Images, or turn on Load images from other websites in Settings › Publishing.

Shortcuts don’t work

Some keys are taken by your browser or operating system. With Graphite Pro you can choose different ones in Settings › Keyboard. In a text field, only a few shortcuts like Save and Search are active.

Pro isn’t showing on this device

Sign in with the email address you paid with: it’s in the menu under your photo or initials at the bottom of the sidebar, and on your Lemon Squeezy receipt. Paid with a different email? Write to us and we’ll move it.

Pro asks me to sign out another device

Pro works on up to 5 devices at a time. Open Settings › Account › Signed-in devices and choose Sign Out next to one you no longer use.

My payment went through but Pro isn’t on

It normally turns on within a minute. Check your connection, then open Settings › Graphite Pro. If it still isn’t on after an hour, write to us with the order number from Lemon Squeezy’s receipt.

A membership payment failed

Lemon Squeezy tries again over the next few days. Choose Manage Membership… in Settings › Graphite Pro to update how you pay. If the payment can’t be taken, the membership stops and Pro pauses. Your documents and settings are untouched.

Pro has stopped

A refunded purchase or a cancelled membership turns Pro off at the end of what you paid for. Your documents and settings are untouched. If you think it’s a mistake, write to us.

Contact

Found a bug, have a question about Pro, or just want to say hello? Email aryan@aroice.in. For a bug, tell us your browser and device and what you expected to happen. Please don’t send us documents you’d rather keep private: we never need your writing to help.

If Graphite ever runs into a problem, it shows Copy Text and Reopen Graphite buttons. Nothing is reported automatically, so an email helps us fix it. In Settings › General, Copy Diagnostic Report copies technical details (no document text) that you can paste into your message.
